Hispanics: An Untapped Leadership Resource

Colonel Lisa Firmin, USAF (ret)

Air War College - Research Report Submitted to the Faculty

Dec 9, 2002

Col Firmin's research report, published in 2002, provides detailed facts and figures regarding the Latino disparity in the Air Force. Firmin retired from the United States Air Force as a Colonel and its most senior ranking Latina officer, after leading University of Texas - San Antonio’s ROTC program to the best in the nation and being awarded a Bronze Star Medal for her efforts in combat as an Expeditionary Mission Support Group Commander in Iraq’s Sunni Triangle. Her groundbreaking 2002 report was disseminated through the highest levels of the Air Force, including the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Yet, nearly two decades years after her report was published, a comparison of the data then and now clearly depicts a continuing pattern of exclusion.
