On behalf of the Hispanic Veterans Leadership Alliance (HVLA) I want to congratulate you on your appointment and assignment as the Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. This is an extremely important and influential position for the national security of this nation, and we welcome you as a strong leader of both ability and character needed to helm the Naval Academy.
Your superb record of command of multiple ships, command of Carrier Strike Group 11, and service as interim Commander of Naval Surface Forces provides a great foundation to lead this critically important institution. The future leaders of our nation that comprise the Brigade of Midshipmen deserve the best leader our nation has to offer, and we believe you have demonstrated that you are the best of the best.
The HVLA is especially pleased to celebrate your appointment as the first Hispanic to serve in this critical leadership assignment. This is long overdue and provides evidence to our Hispanic men and women of the Sea Services that successful leadership can be rewarded. You are an excellent example to follow. I had the opportunity to meet with you and to hear you speak during the Leadership Forum at Annapolis this past April, and our young Midshipmen are going to have a superb example to follow.
The HVLA stands ready to assist you and all service academies with the professional development and mentorship of your Midshipmen. Our organization might be especially useful in assisting young Hispanics/Latinos and supporting Hispanic/Latino affinity groups at the USNA and at all service academies.
